A new mammography unit will begin offering full-time mammography services at the SBL Bonutti Clinic in Effingham starting on September 5.
The new mammography unit features the latest in imaging technology, which is the same equipment used in the SBL Mobile Mammography Unit, and in the Women’s Imaging Center on SBL’s main campus.
Mammography breast imaging is of particular importance in the early detection of breast cancer because it is quicker, accurate and inexpensive.
SBL Diagnostic Imaging Ambulatory Manager Karla Rauch said the new mammography unit is filling a need in Effingham and the surrounding area. “There has been a demand for a permanent mammography unit at the SBL Bonutti Clinic, and this unit will be a huge asset to the community,” she said. “This will save people from making a further trip to receive this vital service.”
Later this year, Diagnostic Imaging will also offer Dexa scans, which measure bone density by passing a high and low energy X-ray beam through the body to detect osteoporosis. Early detection is vital for treating osteoporosis, and Dexa scans are painless and take 10 to 20 minutes to complete.
The mammography unit is part of SBL Bonutti Clinic Diagnostic Imaging (Suite 102), located just inside Entrance B, and will perform mammograms between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

The SBL Mobile Mammography Unit also travels to various communities within the SBL 10-county service area, offering accessibility for the vital service. The mobile unit will visit more than 10 communities in October. For more information, visit https://www.sarahbush.org/womensimagingcenter/, or call 217-258-2588 for an appointment.
