Scholarships were awarded recently through the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Foundation to several SBL nurses who are continuing their educations.
The scholarships are funded through endowments and were established by donors for the sole purpose of continuing education for Sarah Bush Lincoln nursing staff.
The following scholarships were awarded:
Li-Shiang Chang Award – This award was established by his grandchildren due to the wonderful care he received in the Critical Care Unit, and is awarded annually to a CCU nurse. The recipient is: Natasha Myers, RN - Critical Care Unit.
Mildred Seidel Perry Award – This award was established by her son Keith Perry to honor his mother’s nursing career, which spanned six decades. This year, two recipients were selected: Anita Hogan, RN, - 3 West and Kelli Hughes, RN - 2 East.
Dr. John Jemsek Award – This award was established by fellow physicians honoring the career of Dr. Jemsek. This year’s recpient is Ashlee Abitz, RN - 3 West.
Junie Longcor Award – This award was created by Junie’s family, Gary and Deb Longcor, in honor of the care she received in the Regional Cancer Center during her battle. It is awarded annually to a Cancer Center staff member. This year the recipient is Sasha Edwards, RN - Regional Cancer Center.
Dr. James Van Popering/Gastroenterology Award – This award was created Dr. Van Popering, formerly a gastroenterologist at SBL for the purpose of education and/or certification of a gastroenterology nurse. The recipient is: Ingrid Todd, RN - Special Procedures.
The Health Foundation also awarded three scholarships to graduating high school seniors. The scholarships were established by donors to help students pursue their dreams.
Lloyd and Selma Sweeney Scholarship – This is a one-time award of up to $5,000 to help fund tuition and fees to help one student pursuing a degree in agriculture and two students pursuing degrees in healthcare.
The Lloyd and Selma Sweeney Scholarships were awarded to Abigail Abercrombie of Arthur, Grace Stamps of Mattoon and Caleigh Parsley of Tuscola.
Abercrombie plans to study pre-veterinary medicine at Eastern Illinois University with her end goal of becoming a small animal veterinarian. Stamps plans to study mathematics and Spanish on a pre-medicine track with her goal of becoming a neurosurgeon. Parsley plans to attend Eastern Illinois University in pursuit of a bachelor of science in nursing and continue on to obtain an advanced practice nurse degree to be a nurse practitioner.
